Music Includes: Instrumental Music, Band, Instrumental Jazz, Professional Development in the Arts
Students enrolled in all music sequences at Lord Beaverbrook have numerous mandatory and optional opportunities for performance, including: festivals, and professional clinics/workshops with musicians from around the globe. In addition, all music students have the opportunity to travel provincially, nationally, and internationally during their time at LBHS. Please see the music director for more information.
Instrumental Music 10, 20, 30 – Brass, Woodwind, Percussion
Students enrolled in this sequence will develop their knowledge and technical abilities relating to their specific instrument. Students participate in group, individual and guest musician instruction to gain understanding of musical concepts and techniques. This class is located inside of a student’s regular timetable. Students co-register in the appropriate Instrumental Music 15, 25, or 35.
- While beginners are able to join the program in grade 10, it is generally recommended that students have a basic understanding of their chosen instrument and the ability to read standard music notations and musical concepts before entering this sequence. A general fee is associated with this course.
Band 15, 25, 35 – Symphonic Band
Students enhance their technical and musical skills while playing in an ensemble setting. Courses are offered outside of a student’s regular timetable (in the morning) to allow students to engage in multiple Fine and Performing Arts courses.
- As this is a co-requisite course, students must be enrolled in Instrumental Music 10-20-30 in order to participate in Band 15-25-35. Students who are enrolled in private music lessons may apply to have this requirement waived. Meeting and audition with Music Director is required.
Vocal Music 10, 20, 30
Students who wish to understand singing and music in greater depth enroll in this sequence. Students develop vocal and general music fundamentals.
- All beginners are welcome! While this course is intended for students who have a basic-intermediate understanding of singing, all aspects of music theory, history, and vocal technique are covered in this course. There is a general fee associated with this course
Choir 15, 25, 35 - Concert Choir
Students who enter this sequence enhance their technical and vocal musical skills while performing in an ensemble. Courses are offered outside of a student’s regular timetable (in the morning) to allow students to engage in multiple Fine and Performing Arts courses.
- It is recommended that students have a basic understanding of singing before entering this sequence. Students are required to participate in all rehearsals and performances. There is a general fee associated with this course.
Instrumental Jazz 15, 25, 35
Students who want the opportunity to advance their skills, knowledge, and appreciation of the jazz idiom enroll in this sequence. Courses are offered outside of a student’s regular timetable to allow students to engage in multiple Fine and Performing Arts courses.
- Students must be enrolled in Instrumental Music or have Music Department approval to enter this sequence. Students gain Lord Beaverbrook Music Department approval before entering Jazz 25 and 35. Students are required to participate in all rehearsals and performances. There is a general fee associated with this course.
Leadership in the Arts 35
This course is an opportunity for dedicated fine arts focused students to explore the arts to a higher level of professionalism. It was created to help students prepare for career choices in the arts and learn the processes of resume writing, portfolio creation, creating contacts in the arts, marketing, fostering passion for the arts, and demonstrating through records and artifacts, their growth as artists.
In this course students will:
- purposefully reflect upon learning experiences in the Fine Arts disciplines as a cross-disciplinary group;
- explore how they see themselves as artists;
- become more aware of the process involved in preparing for the marketing and business aspect of being a professional artist in art, music, drama, dance, design, writing or film.
Fine and Performing Arts l Certificate
Successful completion of 30 credits of Fine & Performing Arts coursework and the completion of the Leadership in the Arts 35 course allow students to achieve the Calgary Board of Education Fine Arts Certificate upon graduation.

Meet the Teacher
Mr. Scott Campbell, Music Director at Lord Beaverbrook, has been teaching with the CBE since 2006. Currently the Learning Leader for the Fine & Performing Arts Department, he oversees all Fine arts programming and is responsible for bands at Beaverbrook. Our performing ensembles will be involved in many concerts, workshops and festivals throughout the year and there will be various travelling opportunities throughout the year.
